Gurjant Singh Bains

I am a lawyer at Strategic Criminal Defence, a full-service criminal defence firm with central offices across Western Canada and Ontario.

I obtained my Juris Doctor from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia in 2022. Before attending Thompson Rivers University, I studied law abroad for a year at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. This experience gave me a unique perspective on the criminal justice system in another country. While there, I was awarded first-class honours for my academic success.

As part of my law school experience, I was the team lead at Pro-Bono Street Law. My team took the initiative on access to justice issues by coordinating outreach events with local organizations to provide homeless members of Leicester with free legal education.

I also finished as a finalist in the Canadian Law Moot competition at the University of Leicester.

I have always been drawn to law, and Criminal Law in particular. Even prior to law school, I attended Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta where I completed my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice.

During my time at Mount Royal University, I made several appearances on the Dean’s Honor Roll for my academic achievements and was awarded the Manmeet Bhullar Leadership Scholarship for my academic success and contributions to my community.

After graduating with my Juris Doctor from Thompson Rivers University I returned home to Calgary to complete my training, and to pursue my passion for criminal defence law.

Having amassed a wealth of training and experience across Canada and abroad, I wanted to come back to Calgary to help people in the community where I grew up, and which I call home. Most of the time, you can usually find me working and helping people, whether in court, at the office, or in the community.

I also enjoy spending time with my German Rottweiler, family, and friends. When I’m not working (which is rare), I can often be found shooting a basketball, playing tennis, or simply watching a Marvel movie.

I believe the role of a criminal defence lawyer is to balance the power between the state and its people. I aspire to be a zealous advocate consistently relied upon by my clients to obtain the best possible results.

Everyone is entitled to an unequivocal defence tailored to their unique circumstances. I understand that facing a criminal charge can be one of the most stressful experiences in one’s life and I have a compassionate understanding of the impact legal proceedings can have on both individuals and families. This is why I am committed to being by my client’s side every step of the way.
