Ahmed Haroon

I am a criminal defence lawyer at Strategic Criminal Defence, a full-service criminal law firm with offices across Western Canada and Ontario. I practice out of the Edmonton office, where I represent individuals charged with a wide range of criminal and quasi-criminal offences.

Born and raised in Edmonton, I’ve always felt a strong connection to this city and the people who live here. That connection has shaped the way I approach my work. I see criminal defence as more than just advocacy, it’s about showing up for people during some of the most difficult moments in their lives and defending their rights with intelligence, preparation, and purpose.

I completed both my Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) at the University of Alberta. While in law school, I focused heavily on criminal law and evidence, and I dedicated much of my time to hands-on advocacy through Student Legal Services. I served as both a caseworker and dayleader, managing files in criminal, family, and civil law, and appearing in hearings before the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS) and Alberta Court of Justice. I also completed an experiential placement with Legal Aid Alberta, where I assisted duty counsel in courtrooms across Edmonton, helping clients with bail, docket appearances, and pre-trial resolutions.

During my articles I had the opportunity to serve as second chair on complex and serious matters. I worked on cases involving homicide, sexual assault, child pornography, drug trafficking, fraud, and impaired driving causing death. I was directly involved in client meetings, disclosure review, trial strategy, and the preparation of cross-examinations and legal submissions.

My experience has also included appellate litigation. I have drafted factums and written submissions for cases before the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. I take pride in the written side of advocacy, translating complex records and legal issues into clear, persuasive arguments.

In addition to criminal defence, I have assisted regulated professionals facing disciplinary proceedings, including physicians and accountants. I have helped prepare defence strategy and written submissions in high-stakes tribunal matters.

I approach every case with careful preparation, strategic thinking, and a strong sense of responsibility. I believe in the presumption of innocence and in the right of every person to a full and fair defence.
