About
I am a criminal defence lawyer based in the Calgary office of Strategic Criminal Defence.
I’ve represented clients charged with criminal offences across all levels of court in Alberta, from shoplifting offences to sexual assault, and from the Alberta Court of Justice to the Alberta Court of Appeal. I also have extensive experience working on Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) and Judicial Reviews of those matters to the Court of King’s Bench in Alberta.
Everyone is entitled to a strong defence. I treat all of my files with the same drive, no matter how serious the alleged offence. For each client, I am committed to understanding your unique circumstances, communicating clearly, and working together to find the best solution possible.
Career
During law school, I was heavily involved with Student Legal Assistance (SLA), the University of Calgary’s pro-bono legal clinic for low-income Calgarians. While there, I held roles including Trial Division Coordinator, Deputy Student Director, and finally Articling Student after graduation. I was also awarded Best 2nd Year Caseworker, and the Provincial Court Judge’s Award of Merit for my exceptional contributions to the organization.
Through my time with SLA, I gained hands-on experience representing clients in criminal, family and civil matters. This gave me early exposure to courtroom procedures and lasting positive relationships with defence lawyers, judges, and prosecutors. It also engaged me in multi-day trials and complex sentencing matters. Throughout I mentored other students, which further solidified the foundation of my practice.
Following my articles, I worked at a highly regarded criminal law firm in Calgary where I worked under two senior criminal defence lawyers, who are experts in the field of driving and criminal offences. I gained invaluable experience assisting on complex cases including homicides, drug trafficking charges and driving fatalities. With their guidance, I conducted and developed materials for hundreds of Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) and Judicial Reviews. Independently, I also ran high-level criminal matters and driving files across Alberta.
Community Involvement and Mentorship
I continue to be actively involved with the University of Calgary Faculty of Law as the primary coach for the Court of Appeal Criminal Moot at the University of Calgary. This gives me unrivaled access to senior defence lawyers, prosecutors and judges as we prepare our students for a mock appeal moot. I also frequently volunteer with SLA to mentor and support law students, and as a judge for student moot and debate competitions.
Finally, I am also a regular volunteer at Calgary Legal Guidance (CLG), where I provide legal advice, information and guidance to low-income Calgarians.
