About
I am a criminal defence lawyer at Strategic Criminal Defence. Strategic Criminal Defence is a full service criminal defence law office, with central offices across Western Canada and Toronto.
From an early age, I’ve been passionate about human rights and advocating for those whose voices are often unheard. This drive to stand up for others is at the heart of my approach to criminal defence.
Education Background
My passion for criminal law began during my academic career at the Mount Royal University in Calgary, where I pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. It was during this time that I developed a particular interest in criminology, justice studies, forensic interviewing, youth justice, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These courses ignited my passion for criminal defence and solidified my belief in the rule of law.
During my undergraduate studies, I was proud to be part of a group of students who founded the Canadian Association of Criminology and Legal Studies—a federal non-profit organization focused on developing and promoting criminological scholarship for both emerging and experienced members of the criminology and legal disciplines.
I have always been mindful of the underlying norms that shape our understanding of issues and strived to broaden my perspective by embracing diverse viewpoints rather than adhering to a limited narrative. This belief guided both my volunteer work and my decision to pursue international opportunities. I traveled to the United Kingdom to obtain my law degree at the University of Southampton, where I continued to focus on justice studies, international law, and human rights. My time abroad significantly broadened my worldview, shaping my approach to legal issues.
During law school, I volunteered at the University’s legal clinic, where I gained hands-on experience in providing legal assistance to individuals who could not afford representation.
Career Path and Experience
Before becoming a lawyer, I spent 5 years working as a youth worker, providing support to some of the most vulnerable young people in our society. I worked closely with incarcerated youth and the following court ordered programs:
- Secure Services- a confined court-ordered,monitored service under the Child and Family Enhancement Act, assessing and stabilizing youth with suicidal tendances, violent behaviours and dangerous lifestyles.
- Reflections- a confined court-ordered andmonitored service for youth who are being sexually exploited or are at risk of sexual exploitation.
- PChAD- a confined court-ordered and monitored service to youth abusing or addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Working in court-ordered safe houses provided me with firsthand insight into the legal complexities surrounding state-imposed restrictions on individual liberty. While I recognized the protective intent behind these measures for vulnerable youth, I often found myself reflecting on a critical constitutional question: Do these court orders align with the principles of fundamental justice as guaranteed under Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
Articling at Legal Aid Alberta exposed me to the opportunity to serve some of Alberta’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals. This experience was pivotal in shaping my career. At Legal Aid, I was entrusted with a wide range of cases, allowing me to gain invaluable in-court litigation experience, refine my oral and written advocacy skills. I learned not only the technical aspects of legal practice but also the importance of client-centered advocacy, compassion, and strategic thinking in criminal defence.
Since being admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2024, under the guidance of experienced senior mentors, I gained hands-on experience with complex cases such as a homicide, drug offences, sexual assaults, and driving offences. In the areas of youth and adult criminal law, I’ve independently represented clients in a range of challenging matters, including domestic violence and harassment charges, aggravated assaults, break and enter, fraud and weapons offences.
Community Involvement
Giving back to my community has always been a core part of who I am. I’ve dedicated my time to a variety of organizations including Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse, Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, Lawyers Without Borders and Calgary Legal Guidance, where I continue to volunteer, providing pro bono legal advice to Calgarians.
