Mary Mysak

I am an articling student at Strategic Criminal Defence, a full-service criminal defence law office, with central offices in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Victoria, Saskatchewan, and Toronto.

My practice is based in Calgary.

My undergraduate studies in Criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University laid the foundation for my passion for criminal law. Studying the criminal justice system highlighted the importance of procedural fairness, constitutional rights, and meaningful access to justice. Recognizing the vital role that effective legal advocacy plays within the justice system inspired me to pursue a career in criminal defence, where I can advocate for individuals facing some of the most challenging circumstances of their lives.

Building on the interest I developed during my undergraduate studies, I earned my Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. There, I deepened my knowledge of criminal law through courses including Evidence, Advanced Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Trial Advocacy, Sentencing, Sexual Assault Law and, Drinking and Driving Law. These courses gave me a strong understanding of the legal principles that govern criminal prosecutions and the constitutional protections available to individuals facing criminal charges.

During my second year of law school, I was selected as one of two students to represent the University of Saskatchewan at the MacIntyre Cup, Western Canada’s premier criminal jury trial competition. Competing at the MacIntyre Cup allowed me to develop practical courtroom advocacy skills while refining my ability to analyze evidence, think strategically, and present persuasive arguments. I was honoured to receive the award for Best Opening Statement.

I am committed to protecting my clients’ rights and advocating for their interests at every stage of the criminal process. I understand the significant impact that criminal charges can have on an individual’s life, reputation, and future. For that reason, I approach every matter with diligence and compassion, working closely with senior defence counsel to develop effective legal strategies and pursue the best possible outcome for each client.
